Vitamin D: A Summer Essential for Your Mouth and Body

With summer here, many people benefit from paying extra attention to their vitamin D levels - especially those in desert climates like Tucson, where the heat limits time outdoors. Vitamin D plays a key role in supporting both your oral microbiome and whole-body health.

What the research shows:

  • Supports a diverse oral microbiome: Studies link higher vitamin D levels to greater diversity of healthy oral bacteria, which helps protect against gum inflammation and cavities.

  • Regulates immune response: Vitamin D promotes the production of antimicrobial peptides and has anti-inflammatory effects that support balanced immune activity in the mouth.

  • Maintains bone health: Essential for keeping jawbone strong, which anchors your teeth and maintains periodontal health.

  • Supports gut health: Emerging evidence suggests vitamin D helps increase beneficial bacteria and overall microbial diversity in the gut, which is closely connected to oral and systemic health.

  • Inhibits harmful oral bacteria: Research shows vitamin D3 can suppress the growth of cavity-causing bacteria like Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus.

What you can do:

  • Get 10–15 minutes of sun exposure in the early morning (between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m.) or late afternoon (after 4 p.m.) when possible - avoid peak midday heat and strong sun.

  • Eat D-rich foods such as pasture-raised egg yolks, wild salmon, canned tuna, and fortified plant-based milks.

  • Test your vitamin D level with your primary care provider, especially if you have gum issues or fatigue.

  • Take vitamin D3 with K2 to support calcium metabolism.
