Hi Friends,

Dr. Christina Kraft here to share how improving your sleep can support your teeth, gums, and overall health.

Why Better Sleep Means a Healthier Mouth

If your gums bleed, cavities keep coming back, or fatigue lingers—it may not just be about brushing and flossing. The quality of your sleep directly affects the health of your teeth, gums, and oral microbiome.

Sleep is when your body (and mouth) repair and restore balance. Without it, inflammation rises, immunity weakens, and your oral health starts to break down in ways brushing and flossing can’t fix.

Some ways sleep affects your oral and overall health:

  • Poor sleep fuels inflammation, which can worsen gum disease.

  • Sleep apnea affects teeth and gums and raises risk for high blood pressure, diabetes, and memory issues.

  • Mouth breathing at night can raise blood pressure and increase your risk for cavities.

  • Jaw clenching or teeth grinding (bruxism) can increase tooth wear, stress gums, and contribute to TMJ issues.

Sleep-related challenges can have a profound impact in your life, but you have the power to improve your health and smile by adopting simple habits that help you rest and restore balance.

Practical steps for better sleep and oral health:

  • Keep a consistent sleep schedule: Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.

  • Get morning light: Exposure to natural light soon after waking helps reset your circadian rhythm and improve sleep quality.

  • Optimize your sleep environment: Make your bedroom dark, cool, and screen-free.

  • Support nasal breathing at night: Proper nasal breathing helps maintain saliva flow, balances oral pH, and reduces cavity risk. Notice snoring, dry mouth, or frequent cavities? It may be a sign to get support.

  • Address underlying factors: Stress, airway issues, or nutrient deficiencies can all impact sleep quality—these are things we can identify and support in an integrative dental consultation.

If you’re interested in exploring how your sleep, oral health, and lifestyle all connect, I’d love to invite you to schedule an integrative dental consultation with me.

Be Well,

Christina Kraft DMD
